Read her article and check out how many great things subtitles can be, other than “just” a translation tool.

The function of subtitles really has come a long way from just helping you understand what you are watching. The good thing about subtitles is that you have the concept of what is being said while you still hear how a native speaker enunciates each syllable of each word. If an interpreter is having a hard time understanding a particular spoken word, then a subtitle will be a great guide to help him fully grasp what that spoken word would be in written form. This will certainly help increase comprehension as well as competency of the language.
